Land Surveying: Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Survey?
This question can be answered best by asking yourself the following questions:
- Do I know where the boundaries of my property are?
- Is there any encroachment onto my property that could ultimately lead to the loss of a portion
of my land by adverse possession?
- Are the buildings of my land entirely within the boundaries of my property?
What will a surveyor do for me?
- study your property description and show you what, in his professional opinion, the records and
facts indicate the boundaries of your land to be.
- survey your property, and adjacent property, if necessary to complete his work.
- advise you if there is any defect in your land description or evidence of encroachment.
- set monuments at your property corners and mark them so they can be easily found. A record of his
work is filed in his office for future reference.
- prepare a certificate of survey of your property, indicating the measurements he has
made, the monuments placed, and any other data requested.
How much will a survey cost?
Land surveying cost is dependent upon many factors, such as the type of surveying required, weather
conditions, the availability of existing records and monuments, the type of terrain, and the surveyor's
familiarity and knowledge of the area.
Competitive bidding for the lowest cost does not necessarily assure the best interest of either the
client or the land surveyor.
